There are many recession busting wedding articles around at the moment. Here are some of my favourites:
A Times article suggests going to Oxfam for the dress. At first I thought this was a joke – but on closer inspection they actually have some pretty good stuff.
With the cost of wedding flowers often being between £2,500 and £5,000, you could save a big chunk of money by using a DIY flower company.
The mother-in-law may come in useful here with the flower arranging! She can also save you £500 by baking the wedding cake – then you just need to get it professionally iced. Incredibly, you can even rent a polystyrene cake from CakeRental.com.
How else are you being told to cut back? Dropping the wedding DJ seems to be a current favourite. Even Alanis Morissette used an iPod at her wedding.
At the extreme end of the spectrum, one wedding industry commentator suggests that couples should cut out the cost of the wedding photographer and get a friend to capture the day instead. Hmm… this is one option we’re not too sure about.
Finally, we have seen a reasonable number of our brides (8%) getting married on a Friday when the rates are more negotiable. Perhaps Friday is the new Saturday after all. Indeed, some suggest you could save up to £5,000 by arranging a wedding between October and February – in the off season.
As a provider to the wedding industry, blogging on this topic puts us in an awkward position as luxury wedding favours could easily be squeezed out to save a few pounds.
However, if you really want your guests to leave with a ‘thank you’ that creates a lasting impression, then don’t skimp on the special details that make a difference… even if you are getting married in the snow, in a second hand dress, with a plastic cake, and wilted flowers 🙂
